How to Achieve the Perfect Work-Life Balance as a New Mompreneur

Finding the perfect work-life balance as a stay-at-home mom can seem impossible. But the fact is, most households can’t survive on a single income alone. As a mom, you are torn between wanting to contribute and focus on your kids. Thankfully, however, it has never been easier to craft your own business around your family.

Play to Your Strengths

Start by looking at the skills you already have. You probably already have the ability to start a new business immediately even if it doesn’t feel like it. If you are good at photography, you could become an event photographer and take on as many or as few jobs as you want. Likewise, a natural coordinator would do well as an event planner or virtual assistant. Or, turn your talents into something teachable. You can easily teach art or music lessons from the comfort of your house.

Another great way to put your knowledge to use is to become an online expert, according to Entrepreneur. Many industries seek the advice of a consultant, which makes this perfect for those coming from demanding full-time jobs. You may have to start with low prices, but as you gain a reputation you can begin to charge more.

Master Time Management

The key component to starting your own business is picking a job that offers flexibility. Young children have needs that don’t necessarily fit into a traditional 9-5 job. They might get sick, their school could have a half day, you need to drive them between playdates to music lessons to their softball practice. With a daily changing schedule, time management can be tough. Plan ahead as much as possible, but be ready for hiccups during your day.

Take Part in the Gig Economy

Take advantage of the gig economy. This is perfect for when you’re in a bind and need to make some fast money, There are numerous apps and websites that you can sign up for that almost instantly allow you to choose when you work and what jobs to accept from driving for Uber to running errands on Task Rabbit.  Pet sitting also is a great way to earn an extra income. You get to set your own schedule and prices and you only have to work with dog breeds and sizes you are comfortable with.

Draw the Line

It’s easy to get caught up in your business, but remember why you choose to leave the traditional workforce: your kids. What to Expect recommends that you set up your own workspace in the home. If your kids are old enough to understand, tell them not to disturb you when you are in your office unless it’s an emergency. You can help them adjust to this by setting their expectations, let them know how long you need to work and give them something to look forward to after you’ve clocked out of work for the day.

The Art of Saying No

Master the art of saying no early on, especially toward clients. If you’re at the part and someone calls, let it go to voicemail. Your child will know if you’re not fully present and engaged with them. Be sure to prioritize school plays and soccer games over work meetings. Work can always be rescheduled.

If you’re transitioning from being a full-time mom to a mompreneur, recognize that this transition may be hard on your child at first and it may take time for them to adjust to you no longer being their sole attention. Show them you still love and care about them the same as you did before, not through grand gestures or showering them with gifts. It’s the little things matter, like always being there for bedtime or reading them their favorite story.

The Mompreneur Life

Finding that elusive work-life balance can be difficult, but it’s not impossible. The key is in keeping your priorities in order and work and life separate. Through trial and error, you’ll figure it out, and your family will be stronger for it.
